Synonyms:

Subspecies, varieties, forms and cultivars of plants belonging to the Echinocactus polycephalus group

  • Echinocactus parryi Engelm.: similar in morphology to Echinocactus polycephalus but distinct by the solitary manner of growth and whiter spines. Distribution: Northern Chihuahua.
  • Echinocactus polycephalus Engelm. & J.M.Bigelow: (subsp. polycephalus) has spines covered with fine hairs, and forms clumps of 20-30 heads. Distribution: widespread at lower elevations in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts in California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona, and northwestern Sonora.
  • Echinocactus polycephalus subs. xeranthemoides (J.M.Coult.) N.P.Taylor: has spines glabrate, and usually grows in unsymmetrical clumps rarely exceeding 12 stems and is sometimes solitary. Distribution: Arizona and southern Utah.
